Overview

Alankar, Ras, and Chhand form the structural foundation of Hindi Vyakaran, focusing on the aesthetic and rhythmic elements of literature. Mastering these is crucial for competitive exams as they frequently test the ability to identify figures of speech, sentiment, and poetic meters in given lines of verse.

अलंकार (Alankar)

Alankars are the ornaments of language that enhance the beauty of poetry. In exams, you must distinguish between Shabdalankar, which relies on sound, and Arthalankar, which relies on meaning.

  • Shabdalankar: Anupras, Yamak, Shlesh
  • Arthalankar: Upma, Rupak, Utpreksha, Atishayokti
  • Anupras: Repetition of varna
  • Yamak: Same word, different meanings
  • Shlesh: One word, multiple meanings
  • Upma: Comparison using sa, si, tulya

रस (Ras)

Ras represents the emotional essence or the 'flavor' of a literary work. To solve these, identify the Sthayi Bhav (permanent emotion) associated with each Ras.

  • Shringar Ras: Rati (Love)
  • Veer Ras: Utsah (Energy)
  • Karun Ras: Shok (Grief)
  • Hasya Ras: Has (Laughter)
  • Raudra Ras: Krodh (Anger)
  • Bibhats Ras: Jugupsa (Disgust)

छंद (Chhand)

Chhand refers to the rhythmic arrangement of syllables in a verse. Focus on counting 'Laghu' and 'Guru' matras to categorize the meter.

  • Matrik Chhand: Based on matra count
  • Varnik Chhand: Based on varna count
  • Doha: 13-11 matra structure
  • Soratha: 11-13 matra structure
  • Chaupai: 16 matra per charan
  • Laghu (I) = 1 matra, Guru (S) = 2 matras

Exam Tip

Instead of reading the entire definition, look for keywords like 'sa/si/sam' for Upma or specific Sthayi Bhav indicators to solve in seconds.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Yamak and Shlesh due to the presence of repeated words in the stanza.
  • Miscalculating matras in Chhand by ignoring the 'ardha-akshar' rules.
  • Mistaking the Sthayi Bhav of Karun Ras with Vibhats Ras.
