Overview

Reading Comprehension tests an aspirant's ability to extract, analyze, and infer meaning from written texts within strict time constraints. It is a fundamental component of language proficiency in CBSE and competitive exams, serving as a high-scoring section if approached with a structured analytical mindset.

Factual Passages

Factual passages focus on data, reports, and objective information which require scanning for specific keywords and details. Success relies on identifying the 'who, what, where, and when' to answer direct questions accurately.

  • Skim the passage once to grasp the main theme
  • Underline dates, statistics, and proper nouns
  • Use keyword matching for direct retrieval
  • Avoid adding external knowledge or assumptions

Discursive Passages

These passages involve argumentative or persuasive texts that present multiple viewpoints or complex themes. To score well, aspirants must map the logical flow and identify the author's stance versus counter-arguments.

  • Identify the primary thesis statement
  • Trace the transition words like 'however' or 'consequently'
  • Distinguish between opinions and established facts
  • Note the author's tone: critical, neutral, or supportive

Inference Questions

Inference questions require reading 'between the lines' to draw conclusions not explicitly stated in the text. This is the most challenging segment as it requires evaluating evidence against possible logical interpretations.

  • Eliminate options that contradict the passage
  • Look for evidence-based implications
  • Do not over-infer; stick to the author's logic
  • Analyze the context of specific vocabulary in the passage

Exam Tip

Always read the questions before the passage to target your search and save critical time.

Common Mistakes

  • Over-analyzing sentences instead of focusing on the author's main intent
  • Spending too much time on a single difficult question and losing momentum
  • Allowing personal biases to influence the interpretation of the text
