What's Official
The Union Public Service Commission has finalized the schedule for the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2026. The examination is set to take place on August 21, 22, 23, 29, and 30, 2026. This year, the recruitment drive aims to fill approximately 933 vacancies across prestigious positions such as IAS, IPS, and IFS.
Candidates are required to appear in two sessions daily: a forenoon session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon and an afternoon session from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The admit cards, which were released on August 14, are mandatory for entry. It is crucial that candidates verify all personal details against their original photo ID cards immediately.
Tip
Print at least three copies of your e-admit card and keep them in separate folders to ensure you are never without one during the five-day cycle.
Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme
The UPSC Mains is a rigorous test of analytical depth and writing endurance. It comprises nine descriptive papers that carry a total weightage of 1,750 marks. These include the Essay paper, four General Studies papers (GS I-IV), two Optional subject papers, and two qualifying language papers (English and an Indian Language).
The merit list is derived from these 1,750 marks, supplemented by the 275-mark Personality Test, totaling 2,025 marks. While language papers are qualifying in nature, scoring below the threshold can disqualify a candidate from the final ranking. The descriptive nature of these papers demands not just factual accuracy but a structured, coherent presentation of arguments.
Section-wise Priority Breakdown
With the exam days approaching, focus your final revisions on the high-yield areas of General Studies. GS II (Governance and IR) and GS III (Economy and Tech) often reward candidates who can link current affairs with static syllabus concepts. Use your time on Aspirant Arcade to review your notes on these specific domains, as the gamified interface helps reinforce these complex topics through rapid-fire recall.
Prioritize the Ethics paper (GS IV) as it is the most scoring section if you have a structured approach to case studies. Ensure you are well-versed in the 'Key Terminology' for each subject, as precise vocabulary can significantly elevate your answer quality compared to generalist responses.
Mandatory Exam Day Protocols
The integrity of the exam is paramount, and the Commission has zero tolerance for prohibited items. Electronic devices, including smartwatches, Bluetooth devices, and mobile phones, must be left at home or outside the exam venue. Do not write any identification marks, names, or symbols on your answer booklets, as this leads to immediate disqualification.
- ▸Carry a physical printout of your e-admit card for every single session.
- ▸Bring the original photo identity card that matches the one provided in your application form.
- ▸Arrive at the venue well before the gate closure time; entry is strictly prohibited for latecomers.
- ▸Expect mandatory face authentication at the center; cooperate with officials to ensure a smooth check-in.
- ▸Use only black ballpoint pens for all descriptive responses.
